St Aidan’s Church of England Academy in Darlington has strengthened its language teaching with the arrival of a Foreign Language Assistant from France.
Thanks to a British Council scheme, Valentin Hery, from Angers, is working at the Hundens Lane school until June, helping the children to learn about the French language and culture, which are seen as important skills for living in a global society and working in a global economy.
Valentin said: “It’s wonderful. This is really my first experience of teaching and I’m glad I chose to apply to be a Foreign Language Assistant last year in January, during my final year at University.
“I love what I’m doing here, the atmosphere is great and I was really well welcomed by all the members of the staff. They are always here for me if there is something wrong. I try to do my best for the students, to see them making progress and enjoying the lessons and the activities. This is my best reward.”
St Aidan’s Principal Alison Appleyard said: “We have always regarded the teaching of languages as important and the addition of Valentin has been very beneficial. As a special business and enterprise Academy we are particularly aware of the importance of students being able to speak several languages. Working with Valentin really brings the language alive for them.”
